Featured Car-Free Activities

Looking for a fun escape from the city this summer? Take the Amtrak Downeaster to the heart of downtown Saco, Maine. The cultural events, amusement parks, street fairs, galleries, historic sites and museums make Saco perfect for a day or weekend away.

A Summer of Events

Saco is a small town with a long history (it was originally settled in 1617.) The Saco River meanders to the sea and forms a lovely backdrop to the many arts and cultural events in the city.

Enjoy the Saco Sidewalk Art Festival, Saturday June 23, where you’ll find visual arts, performing arts, crafts, artists and sculptors. The La Kermesse Festival Franco-Americaine June 21-24 is a huge block party with fireworks, entertainment, food and French cultural attractions, celebrated in both Biddeford and Saco in conjunction with the Sidewalk Art Festival.

The Dyer Library and Saco Museum feature remarkable programs and art exhibits in an intimate setting. It’s always well worth stopping in to see what’s on display.

Maine’s Largest Amusement Parks

Funtown Splashtown USA, Northern New England’s largest family themed amusement and water park is a short taxi ride away. In 2012, Splashtown opens six new thrill slides reaching heights of over 60 feet as well as a new restaurant and candy store. Stay cool in the water at Splashtown during the day, then dry off and head next door to Funtown and ride Excalibur, Maine’s only wooden rollercoaster!

However you like to spend your summer days, Saco has something to offer. Ride the train for a stress free trip to Southern Maine.

Hit the Beach

Relax on one of the many beaches along the coasts of Biddeford and Saco, a trolley ride from the station.
